Smaller, younger, (and possibly cheaper) plants are not as robust and reliable as their larger counterparts according to the law of averages. Generally,(and up to a size where it becomes irrelevant), It is a myth that smaller plants establish themselves better:
More root plug =the greater total surface area of root enabling faster uptake of moisture and nutrient.
More girth/diameter to stem = greater total surface area of sapwood and cambium(...the vascular system) which enables longer storage of that moisture and nutrient
