Pinus tecunumanii, P7/P9
Pinus tecunumanii, (syn. Oocarpa var' ochoterenae Martínez), Schwerdtfegers Pine P7 @15cm seedling. USDA H9- hardy when older. A small(in the UK) to medium tree 50-55m tall. Long needled and rare in UK.
Native to the mountains of S Mexico Belize, Guatamala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua at elevations of 450-2900m. The crown is narrow with numerous horizontal branches denesly clothed in bright green drooping needles at the tips. Needles 15-22cm long whne mature. Named after Tecun Uman, the last Mayan ruler in Guatamala. Treat as pinus montezumae(in stock here too, and growing well in Falkirk) in terms of hardiness. Both can receive snowfall at higher altitudes, naturally. However, successful growing in the UK will require a frost free environment for the first few years.
