Pinus monophyla Tioga pass, single leaf pinyon pine, USDA H6-hardy
A compact dwarf which gives thick shining blue needles (as opposed to matt sheen needles in the straight specie). Annual growth 3-6cm. The type was originally found as a wild variant 1971.
Tioga Pass, the place, is the highest highway pass in California and the Sierra Nevada @3031m above sea level. We find this variant hardier than other monophylla from lower altitude
