A tree to 35m native to Japan only in climates of cool wet and snowy winters Rose-red pollen cones later becoming yellow. Purple-violet seed cones later becoming reddish-brown. Quadrangular section needles are dark green above and blue-green beneath giving a bicolour effect First discovered by J.G. Veitch c1860 and named after Sir Rutherford Alcock.
